Using Contributions to Influence Delaware Lawmakers
Political contributions from pharmaceutical companies could influence policies in Delaware.
A joint investigation conducted by The Associated Press and the Center for Public Integrity found that pharmaceutical companies spent over $880 million between 2006 and 2015 on political campaign contributions nationwide.
More than $500,000 of those contributions went to state and federal lawmakers in Delaware. The report indicates that drug companies are contributing to political candidates and parties that have influence over policies concerning opioid prescriptions and use.
Senator Bethany Hall-Long has received $3,330 in donations from the pharmaceutical industry since 2008, but says campaign contributions aren’t influencing efforts to prevent and reduce prescription opioid abuse.
Hall-Long even points out that state officials have tried to improve Delaware’s opioid epidemic by changing its prescription monitoring program, which could reduce incidents involving pill mills and doctor shopping.
Representative Bryon Short says the state is more concerned about addressing and reducing opioid addiction directly, and not about what the drug industry might be trying to achieve through large political contributions. Short also indicates that physicians prescribe opioids much too quickly, and that opioid addiction can be prevented with better public policies in place.
